About the Speaker
Josef WIESEHÖFER is a retired professor of Ancient History at the University of Kiel (Germany) and retired director of its ‚Department of Classics‘. He got his Ph.D. from the University of Muenster (Westphalia) in 1977 and his habilitation from the University of Heidelberg in 1988. He is a member of the Academia Europaea, ordinary member of the‚German Archaeological Institute (Berlin)’ and correspondent member of the ‚Academy of Sciences’ at Goettingen, editor of the series ‚Oriens et Occidens’ (Stuttgart) and ‘Kieler Felix-Jacoby-Vorlesungen’ (Goettingen) as well as co-editor of ‘Classica et Orientalia’ (Wiesbaden)‚Asien und Afrika’ (Hamburg), Achaemenid History’ (Leiden) and‚ Oikumene’ (Goettingen). His main interests are in the History of the Ancient Near East and its relations with the Mediterranean World, in Social History, the History of Early Modern Travelogues, and the History of Scholarship.
